Resilience in the Face of Adversity: Malevu’s Remarkable Comeback

On this day in 1960, significant flooding caused by heavy tides, known as loka, resulted in extensive damage to villages along the Nadroga coast of Fiji. Despite the overwhelming challenges faced by the community in Malevu, the villagers did not let the devastation hinder their spirit or determination. They were successful in winning the model village competition sponsored by the Fiji Visitors Bureau, in association with the Fijian Office.

The severe effects of the loka were felt around 4 am on December 30, as the village was submerged under approximately three feet of water. Two important communal structures, the bure, suffered serious damage, while several months of preparation—encompassing gardening and cleaning—were swept away by the tides.

Under the guidance of Buli Baravi, Peceli S Baroka, the villagers immediately began their recovery efforts around 10 am on the same day. They worked diligently to dismantle the remnants of the damaged bure, disposing of thatched materials and organizing the remaining posts. In a show of resilience, the community, particularly the women, concentrated on replanting the gardens that had been stripped away.

Remarkably, just three weeks later, the village rebounded, with gardens flourishing with Hawaiian roses, and the grass gradually recovering from its exposure to salt water. The tireless efforts of the village headman, Uraia Loaloa, were pivotal in rallying the community towards achieving their goal of winning the competition, ultimately securing a prize of 200 pounds.

When Loaloa, filled with pride, accepted the award from Mr. A.C. Reid, Secretary for Fijian Affairs, it symbolized not only a victory for Malevu but also the community’s strength and ability to overcome adversity. In 1960, Malevu, located about 75 miles from Suva on Queen’s Road, consisted of around 13 homes and a population of about 50 residents, featuring its own village shop, credit union, and a large Methodist church.

This story serves as an inspiring reminder of the resilience and determination exhibited by communities when faced with adversity. It highlights the importance of unity and collective effort in restoring not only physical structures but also the spirit of a community.
