Fiji’s Leaders LEAD Symposium 2025 has commenced in Nadi, with a focus on redefining leadership through self-awareness, personal growth, and a purposeful direction rather than just titles. This three-day gathering has attracted local and international leaders in an effort to shift the national viewpoint on what it means to lead.
Ana Laqeretabua, a Leadership Development Practitioner, emphasized the importance of self-reflection for prospective leaders. She highlighted that while many attain leadership due to their technical skills, they often fall short in the interpersonal abilities necessary for effective leadership. “Leadership is hard work,” Laqeretabua stated, pointing out that self-awareness is crucial in facing the various challenges that arise in leading others. She noted that knowing one’s leadership style can greatly impact how effectively one can lead their team, advocating that good leaders balance their characteristics with the needs of their group.
John Griffin also shared insights during the symposium, asserting that personal development is key to inspiring others. He emphasized the human need for recognition and appreciation, noting, “We’re not human doings. We’re human beings. And human beings want to be seen, heard, and appreciated.”
This symposium aims to set new standards for leadership practices in Fiji, nurturing a culture that emphasizes growth and purpose-driven leadership. Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, Fiji’s President, also called for chiefs to play an active role in their communities, underlining the importance of accountability and engagement. His advocacy for self-reliance and participation in community efforts aligns with the symposium’s goals, promoting a shift away from complacency among leaders and encouraging them to take initiative.
Together, the Leaders LEAD Symposium and President Ratu Naiqama’s urgencies present a hopeful vision for the future of leadership in Fiji. They signify a movement towards unity, proactive community involvement, and stronger support systems among leaders and their communities. Such collaborative efforts hold the potential to inspire a more engaged and positively transformed society in Fiji, benefiting all its citizens.
