Workers at Yaqara Pastoral Company have initiated a strike today, demanding higher wages and better treatment amidst rising living costs and delayed salary adjustments. The protest took place with employees gathering and displaying placards that conveyed their grievances, emphasizing the need for dignity, fair compensation, and an urgent reevaluation of wage rates.
Many of the signs highlighted the challenges workers face in meeting basic family needs under the current pay structure. A notable message read, “Workers deserve COLA,” referring to a cost-of-living adjustment. Another placard voiced frustration, stating, “We can’t feed our families on 2023 wages. Don’t make us wait, update the rate.”
The strikers have voiced strong concerns over what they perceive as management’s negligence towards longstanding issues related to wages and working conditions. They are joined by members of the National Union of Workers in this protest.
Yaqara Pastoral Company is located in Rakiraki, and the financial performance of the company has raised questions among employees about the lack of improvements in their compensation despite the organization’s profits. The protest signifies a growing tension between employees and management, highlighting the urgent need for dialogue and potential adjustments to improve worker satisfaction and welfare.
