Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has firmly criticized extravagant spending on ceremonial attire, specifically kalavata (matching outfits) and salusalu (garlands), during his address at the Northern Fibre Connectivity Project inauguration in Savusavu. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing responsible expenditure, urging government officials to consider the financial struggles faced by many citizens.

Rabuka highlighted that while officials may indulge in what appears to be lavish spending, many Fijians are dealing with economic hardships. He has consistently instructed Cabinet ministers to stop using kalavata, remarking, “Enough of kalavata,” and pointed out that funds used for such expenses could be redirected to more urgent needs within the community.

In a light-hearted moment, he shared his own experience at the event, where he received a shirt and a salusalu, finding them impractical. He emphasized that any infrastructure or technological advancements should truly benefit the locals, questioning whether recent developments align with the actual needs of the country and its people.

Rabuka also acknowledged the upward trend in internet connectivity—over 800,000 individuals are now online in Fiji—but stressed that technology should be used meaningfully, especially by the youth. He expressed concern about his descendants engaging in unproductive online behavior and advocated for advancements that serve significant purposes.

This plea for fiscal prudence and awareness aims to align government spending with the realities of Fijian citizens. By redirecting focus toward impactful projects, Rabuka hopes to ensure that every dollar spent contributes to the community’s growth and prosperity.

This aligns with previous sentiments expressed by Rabuka about government expenditure, showcasing his ongoing commitment to fiscal responsibility and sensitivity towards those in need. His approach suggests a hopeful future where government action is directly linked to enhancing the socio-economic conditions of all Fijians.
