Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his readiness to fully cooperate with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and is prepared to testify regarding his involvement in the 1987 coups if summoned. During his statements, Rabuka emphasized his commitment to abide by the commission’s directives, reinforcing the importance of addressing his past actions publicly.

Rabuka’s willingness to testify comes in response to comments made by Ro Naulu Mataitini, a former vice president of the People’s Alliance, who stressed that the TRC’s credibility hinges on Rabuka confronting his historical role in these events. Rabuka acknowledged the influence of traditional leaders, particularly his paramount chief, the Tui Cakau, in guiding the reconciliation process. He affirmed that the TRC is operating under the commission’s authority, making it imperative for him to comply with its orders.

Interestingly, the Prime Minister’s collaborative stance aligns with suggestions made by Mataitini, who has called for a reconsideration of constitutional immunity clauses that have historically protected coup leaders from prosecution. Rabuka has responded by expressing he will respect the commission’s findings and recommendations, indicating a potential shift in how past coup participants may be treated legally in the future.

These developments follow Rabuka’s previous statements indicating an eagerness to engage transparently with the commission, viewing it as an opportunity for truth-telling and national healing. His commitment suggests a significant step towards accountability and reconciliation in Fiji’s political landscape, offering hope for a united future built on understanding and acknowledgment of past grievances. There appears to be an emerging willingness among leaders to confront historical injustices collectively, potentially signaling a positive turn in Fiji’s journey towards reconciliation.
