Patrick Bower, the president of the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Association, has called on primary schools in Fiji to appoint dedicated physical education (PE) teachers. He noted that currently, only a handful of primary schools, including International School Suva, employ specialized PE instructors.
At the recent Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, Bower praised the talent displayed by students from across the country. However, he expressed concern that physical education is often overlooked in both primary and secondary school curriculums. He emphasized that PE should encompass a broad range of activities beyond popular sports like rugby, soccer, and netball, highlighting the need for a comprehensive educational approach to physical health and fitness.
Despite logistical challenges during the event, including a late start and issues with athlete entries, Bower commended coaches and participants for their efforts on the first day of the competition. He acknowledged issues such as late registrations and the complications caused by participants switching sports, which hampered the organization of events. He noted the challenges posed by weather conditions and the importance of keeping athletes informed about their schedules.
Bower expressed satisfaction with the athletes’ performances and praised the dedication of coaches throughout the competition, which resumed last year in Lautoka after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event concluded today.
This call for specialized PE teachers underscores a broader recognition of the importance of physical education in fostering the holistic development of children. By enhancing the educational experience through specialized instruction, primary schools can better prepare students for a healthier, more active future.
In summary, while challenges remain in organizing school athletics, the dedication shown by students, coaches, and officials paints a hopeful picture for the future of physical education in Fiji. With increased emphasis on qualified PE teachers, there is potential for significant improvements in the way sports and physical health are approached in schools.
