The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is currently investigating a critical incident at the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital, where a significant delay in the backup generator’s activation led to a power outage, interrupting surgeries in progress.
Officials from the ministry expressed serious concerns regarding the reliability of the hospital’s infrastructure during crucial medical operations. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu emphasized the ministry’s dedication to uncovering the circumstances surrounding this incident, assuring the public of a commitment to implement necessary improvements to prevent future occurrences. “This unfortunate incident has underscored the need for enhancements, and we are determined to tackle these issues promptly,” the statement mentioned.
In light of recent events, including tragedies that prompted a focus on healthcare quality at CWM, the ministry reiterated the need for dependable power systems in hospitals, particularly during critical times such as hurricane seasons. Dr. Josese Turagava, the chief pediatric surgeon, has previously voiced urgent concerns over the facility’s preparedness to manage emergencies, attributing challenges to insufficient operating theatres and staffing issues, despite a significant $15 million funding allocation intended to address these matters.
Additionally, the Ministry of Health acknowledged the vital contributions of a visiting surgical team from New Zealand during this challenging period, recognizing their commitment to patient care. The ministry called for transparency and cooperation in improving healthcare delivery across Fiji.
While the recent power outage highlights serious challenges, there is encouragement in the ongoing efforts for reform and infrastructure upgrades aimed at strengthening healthcare in Fiji. The resilience of the community and their active advocacy for necessary changes inspire hope for a more reliable healthcare future, enhancing access and quality for all citizens in the coming years.
