Following the devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Port Vila, Vanuatu, on December 17, 2023, local authorities are reporting a significant increase in violence against women. The disaster has resulted in the tragic loss of 14 lives and left 265 individuals injured, prompting deep concern regarding the rise in gender-based violence.

Inspector Kami Toa from the Vanuatu police highlighted that the family protection unit has responded to nearly 50 assault cases, predominantly against women, in addition to approximately 10 incidents of other forms of gender-based violence. This situation reflects an estimated increase of at least two percent in reported cases of violence since the earthquake, revealing alarming trends such as attempted rape and indecent assault targeting young women.

The aftermath of the earthquake has created economic hardships, with many residents losing their homes and jobs. This dire situation has led to a spike in theft as individuals struggle to afford basic necessities. Inspector Toa remarked on the growing desperation, stating, “People are going around stealing other people’s property,” as businesses remain closed and unemployment rises.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has reported that about 1,473 people have been displaced, and approximately 80,000 individuals have been affected overall.
