Veteran politician Surendra Lal expressed his frustration regarding recent discussions aimed at excluding politics from the Cane Growers Council. He argues that restricting individuals from participating in elections based solely on their political affiliations is unjust.

During a consultation on the Sugar Industry Bill held at the FSC Top Club in Labasa, Lal emphasized the importance of political participation in all facets of life. He stated, “Politics is everywhere as it’s a democratic process of making decisions.” He further elaborated that the idea of barring candidates from certain political parties—like the National Federation Party, FijiFirst, or Labour—from running for elections is fundamentally unfair.

Lal’s insights highlight the pervasive nature of politics, indicating that political decisions influence not just the governance of institutions but also the functioning of community organizations and educational boards. He reiterated that a true democratic process cannot exist without inclusive political representation.

This perspective reflects a broader understanding of how integral politics is within society, serving as a reminder of the fundamental rights individuals have to engage in the political arena, regardless of their party affiliations.

In a positive note, Lal’s advocacy for inclusion in political processes may lead to more diverse representations in councils like the Cane Growers Council, fostering richer dialogues and policies that better reflect the interests of all stakeholders involved.
