Cabinet Minister Mosese Bulitavu has strongly criticized opposition MP Sanjay Kirpal for what he describes as a “betrayal” regarding the voting on the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. During a recent parliamentary meeting, Bulitavu expressed his disappointment over Kirpal’s actions, highlighting that the MP had previously assured the Prime Minister of his support for the bill, which was intended to allow for public consultations.
Bulitavu pointed out that Kirpal not only backed the motion to suspend standing orders but also committed to making a decision after evaluating public feedback on the bill. Yet, in a surprising turn of events, Kirpal abstained from voting on the bill, which ultimately contributed to its failure. This unexpected change has intensified tensions within the opposition party, as it follows a period where Kirpal had appeared united with his colleagues.
Adding to the controversy, Kirpal failed to inform Parliament of his sick leave before the vote, leading Bulitavu to claim that Kirpal deliberately evaded the decision, while later hosting a gathering with the Opposition that he termed a “grog celebration.” The minister’s comments about Kirpal’s lack of communication were emphasized when he contrasted Kirpal’s decision with that of fellow MP Rinesh Sharma, who returned to express his change in stance openly.
This incident encapsulates ongoing issues within Fiji’s parliamentary framework, where the level of respect and decorum among legislators has been called into question. Previous discussions have highlighted concerns about decreasing civility in parliamentary exchanges, with figures like former Parliament Secretary-General Mary Chapman voicing that the current environment resembles a “Banana Parliament” due to hostile interactions.
However, amidst these challenges, there is a hopeful perspective surrounding Fiji’s political landscape. Discussions about constitutional reform and the need for ongoing dialogue could potentially pave the way for a more collaborative and inclusive political framework. Encouraging respect for differing opinions and maintaining open communication channels among lawmakers could ultimately lead to a revitalized atmosphere within Fiji’s governance, fostering a democracy that truly reflects the will and aspirations of its people.
