The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has instructed the Police Prosecution to forward the case of Sailosi Raikaci, the son of Assistant Police Commissioner Crime, Sakeo Raikaci, to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP). Sailosi Raikaci, a 24-year-old police constable, is facing a charge of theft after allegedly stealing a minibus worth $65,000 from the Nausori minibus stand on Tuesday evening.
During his initial appearance before Resident Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi, concerns about possible conflict of interest were raised since ACP Raikaci is the superior of Police Prosecutor Sergeant Shelveen Sharma. Consequently, Magistrate Vaniqi opted to transfer the case for impartial handling.
Sergeant Sharma did not oppose the granting of bail for Raikaci but requested strict conditions, which the court imposed. These conditions include providing one surety, surrendering his travel documents, regular reporting to the Nausori Police Station two times a week, a stop departure order, and refraining from interfering with state witnesses.
Raikaci’s lawyer, Isoa Matanitobua, offered two sureties. One of them, his mother Naomi Raikaci, a principal lawyer at the same firm, was accepted, while the other, an employee of the firm, was rejected. Raikaci, currently stationed at Nabua Police Station, will report to the Nausori Police Station, which is listed as his official residence.
Sergeant Sharma informed the court that the first phase of disclosures was completed, although an additional 21 days will be needed to transcribe recordings for the defense. The hearing has been adjourned to January 13, 2025.
This case highlights the importance of accountability within law enforcement and demonstrates the judicial process’s commitment to impartiality, even when involved parties are related to influential figures. It serves as a reminder that justice will be pursued without bias, upholding the rule of law in society.
