Parliament will officially be prorogued starting Monday, December 16, 2024, until the next session begins on Monday, February 24, 2025. Prorogation marks the conclusion of a Parliamentary session within the four-year term and is not considered a sitting day.
The Speaker has registered the prorogation with His Excellency the President, as well as the date for the upcoming State Opening of Parliament. During this prorogation period, all parliamentary business—including sittings and proceedings of the Parliamentary Standing Committees on Bills, Motions, and reports—will be suspended. However, urgent matters may still be addressed at the Speaker’s discretion.
The State Opening of the third parliamentary session will be conducted by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Tawakecolati Lalabalavu, on Monday, February 24, 2025, at 10 am. The ceremony will be accompanied by a full military guard of honor provided by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. Notably, the event will also see the presence of the Acting Honourable Chief Justice Salesi Temo and other judiciary members, highlighting its significance.
Following the State Opening, Parliament will reconvene on Monday, March 3, 2025, for a two-week sitting period. During the prorogation, the operations of the Parliament secretariat will persist unless otherwise notified.
This parliamentary prorogation is a customary part of the legislative process, allowing members to regroup and prepare for the upcoming session. It offers an opportunity for reflection and planning, which is essential for the productive functioning of government.
As the nation looks forward to the State Opening, it symbolizes a fresh start—renewed engagement for parliamentary duties and a commitment to serve the community effectively.
