As the school holidays and festive season approach, parents are being encouraged to take a proactive approach in identifying potential hazards within their communities to safeguard their children. Shairana Ali, the CEO of Save the Children Fiji, has emphasized the heightened vulnerability of children to abuse amid rising incidents of criminal and drug-related activities.

With a lengthy seven-week school break starting this weekend, the likelihood of children and teenagers encountering drugs, alcohol, and other dangerous situations increases significantly. Ali calls for parents to be particularly vigilant during this period.

“The responsibility lies with parents, guardians, and caregivers to collaborate in creating a safe environment for our children. Supervision is crucial, and adults must ensure that when children venture out, they are under the watch of a responsible individual,” Ali stated.

Deputy Director of Community Policing, Superintendent Rakesh Chand, echoed the sentiment, asserting that the duty of care by parents is essential. He also noted that, while extensive monitoring will be in effect during the holidays, parental involvement remains vital. “When children are in school, responsible adults are supervising them. However, it is equally important for parents to keep track of their children when they are home,” he mentioned.

In light of these concerns, Save the Children Fiji urges parents to engage in open conversations with their children regarding safety, be aware of their activities, and educate them on the risks associated with harmful substances and behaviors. Ali further highlighted that prioritizing family time and imparting life lessons are critical responsibilities of parents.

The commitment of parents is essential in creating a secure environment, and their active participation can play a significant role in preventing adverse incidents during the school break and festive season.

In summary, this article stresses the importance of parental vigilance and proactive measures to ensure children’s safety during a critical time, reinforcing the idea that a community’s well-being hinges on active parental involvement. This call to action is hopeful as it can empower families to foster safer environments for children and strengthen community ties.
