The Deputy Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Esala Nayasi, has commended the Solomon Islands for its leadership in hosting the upcoming 54th Forum Leaders Meeting, marking it as a critical moment for the Pacific region. At the inauguration of the Forum’s theme and logo in Honiara, Nayasi expressed his appreciation for Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele and his government’s commitment, noting that this year’s theme, “Iumi Tugeda: Act Now for an Integrated Blue Pacific Continent,” resonates deeply with Pacific values of unity and collective action.

Nayasi emphasized the importance of the forthcoming summit, describing it as more than just a routine gathering. He indicated that discussions would tackle major issues such as regional architecture reform and a proposed Declaration for the Pacific to remain an Ocean of Peace. This context aligns with Prime Minister Manele’s earlier sentiments about the significance of unity among Pacific leaders during challenging times and the need for actionable outcomes rather than mere statements.

The Deputy Secretary General pointed out that the upcoming meeting presents an opportunity to reaffirm unity among member nations and to address the pressing challenges facing the region, which include climate change and security concerns. He suggested that this gathering is essential for translating visions into implementation, urging leaders to move beyond dialogue to deliver on commitments made to their people.

Nayasi also conveyed admiration for the Solomon Islands’ ongoing efforts in promoting the Pacific’s interests, both locally and globally. He emphasized that the cultural values of kinship and shared responsibility reflected through kastom and the wantok system are fundamental to strengthening regional cooperation.

Looking ahead, the Forum Secretariat has assured its full support for the Solomon Islands during its chairmanship, underscoring a collective commitment to advancing regional priorities in an inclusive manner. Nayasi’s closing remarks echoed a spirit of togetherness: “Iumi Tugeda – together, we will act now for an integrated, peaceful, and resilient Blue Pacific.”

This positive outlook highlights the potential for collaborative action among Pacific nations, fostering unity and resilience amidst various challenges that the region faces today. The hope for sustained partnerships and proactive engagement lays a foundation for a promising future for the Pacific Islands.
