Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu has accused the Fijian Government of employing questionable tactics to sway Opposition MPs, suggesting that they are being enticed with promises that may border on bribery. Speaking to FijiLive, Seruiratu mentioned that the Government’s lack of transparency from the outset has contributed to the current tensions within Parliament.
Seruiratu’s comments come in the wake of a vote where four opposition members switched their support, leading to concerns about the unity of the opposition. He explained that these members initially supported the suspension motion to evaluate the proposed constitutional amendments but later re-aligned with the main opposition group upon discovering that the amendments threatened to curtail the voice of the people.
Defending the integrity of his party, Seruiratu stated, “We are not the ‘bitter losers.’ We outmaneuvered the Government, showcasing their disregard for genuine dialogue.” He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and adhering to constitutional procedures when considering any amendments to the Constitution.
Seruiratu called upon the Government to cease misleading the public and to engage in real discussions with all stakeholders in the legislative process. He reassured citizens that the Opposition is willing to assist in the proper and transparent review of the Constitution.
This situation echoes previous statements made by Seruiratu concerning the need for clarity regarding proposed amendments, as many citizens remain anxious about their implications. His commitment to fighting for the rights and interests of Fijians may foster a path towards constructive engagement, where both the government and opposition can collaborate effectively to address the needs of the populace.
As this political landscape continues to evolve, there remains hope that transparent dialogue could lead to meaningful reforms that reflect the diverse aspirations of the Fijian people, aligning with a vision for a more stable and equitable future.
