New Zealand Police played a pivotal role in Operation White Wave, assisting Fiji Police with an explosive detector dog and handler to ensure the safe destruction of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu expressed gratitude to his New Zealand counterpart, Richard Chambers, recognizing the professionalism and expertise of the New Zealand team that underpinned the operation.
The presence of the explosive detection dog significantly improved the safety and efficiency of the operation, underscoring the importance of collaboration among law enforcement agencies across nations. Following a High Court mandate, the destruction of these illicit substances was meticulously executed, highlighting a comprehensive approach toward combating drug-related crimes.
This operation builds on previous successful initiatives where the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, in collaboration with various agencies including New Zealand Police, has made notable progress in tackling drug trafficking. For instance, from July 2023 to January 2025, the Fiji Detector Dog Unit recorded an impressive number of drug seizures, emphasizing an aggressive stance towards dismantling the illegal drug trade.
