The Labasa football club, known as Northpole, returned triumphant with a prize of $4,000 after clinching victory in the 2024 Cecil’s National Club Championship (NCCC). The team triumphed over Buiduna with a score of 6-3 at the Fiji Football Association grounds yesterday.

The match started off competitively, with the first half ending in a 2-2 tie as the Tailevu-Naitasiri club matched the Northerners’ skills. However, Northpole took control in the second half, with Melvin Mani scoring in the 55th minute to put them ahead. Christopher Wasasala added another goal six minutes later, followed by contributions from Eparama Moraica and Mohammed Arbaz to solidify their win.

On the other hand, although Buiduna faced defeat, they made history by reaching their first-ever NCCC final. Their journey included a 2-1 victory against the Nakasi Police team, a close 1-0 win over Lautoka’s rivals, and a draw against Nadroga’s Downtown, which earned them $1,000 as runners-up.

This championship not only rewards the champions but also highlights the emerging teams like Buiduna, who are making significant strides in the local football scene, indicating a promising future for the sport in Fiji.

In summary, while Northpole celebrated their success, Buiduna’s historic run showcases the competitive spirit and development of football clubs in the region. Such events enhance community engagement and encourage future participation in sports.
