Nasinu Secondary School came alive this morning as a team from NFL Australia conducted training sessions and a clinic aimed at introducing American football to Fiji. Participants included members of the school’s under-15 boys and under-19 rugby league teams, highlighting the engagement of local youth in the initiative.
Charlotte Offord, General Manager of NFL Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific, expressed her enthusiasm for the program, noting that it is part of a broader effort to develop the sport across various locations in Fiji over the next few days. She emphasized the positive reception they have received so far, indicating a strong interest in the sport within the community.
Offord highlighted Fiji’s strong reputation in international rugby union and league, expressing hope that young Fijians will explore American football as well. “This is the first time we’ve entered Fiji to try out the NFL market. NFL flag is a non-contact version of American football, and is inclusive of both male and female. So we’re out introducing the game and trying to build a foundation for the sport to grow,” she stated.
The NFL team’s journey does not stop in Nasinu, as they plan to continue their outreach with visits to Sigatoka and Lautoka later this week, further extending their efforts to cultivate interest in American football throughout the region. This initiative not only introduces a new sport to the youth of Fiji but also offers an opportunity for community engagement and development in sports.
