Sashi Kiran has been appointed as the new Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, emphasizing her commitment to several key areas: empowering women, protecting children, supporting vulnerable communities, and addressing gender-based violence (GBV).

In her first remarks, Ms. Kiran expressed gratitude for her predecessor, Lynda Tabuya, acknowledging her invaluable contributions and the solid foundation she established for the ministry. Ms. Kiran affirmed, “As we move into a new chapter, I reaffirm my commitment to addressing the challenges that persist in our society.” She underscored the ministry’s role as an advocate for change, stating that its mission is to ensure that everyone in Fiji is taken care of.

Highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment, Ms. Kiran continued the fight for equality, noting that women are essential to Fijian families and communities. She recognized the barriers many women still face and pledged to strengthen initiatives that promote economic empowerment and create leadership opportunities for women in all areas of life.

When discussing child welfare, Ms. Kiran asserted that children are “the greatest treasure.” She vowed to prioritize their protection, education, and overall well-being, while actively combating child abuse and creating safe environments where every child can flourish.

Additionally, Ms. Kiran emphasized the ministry’s responsibility towards marginalized groups, such as the elderly, people with disabilities, and financially struggling families. She announced plans to review and enhance social protection programs to ensure they are inclusive, effective, and responsive to the needs of all citizens.

This thoughtful approach signals a promising future for social welfare initiatives in Fiji, with leadership dedicated to uplifting every member of society. Such commitments inspire hope for stronger communities and a fairer, more equitable nation.
