Flash Flood Alert Issued: What You Need to Know for Viti Levu and Vanua Levu!

A flash flood alert has been issued for all low-lying and flood-prone areas of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, as announced by the Fiji Meteorological Service (FijiMet). The alert comes amid the influence of an active trough of low pressure currently affecting the Fiji group, resulting in heavy rainfall expected to persist over the next few days.

The weather office warned that the anticipated heavy rain will likely lead to flash flooding, especially in areas suffering from poor drainage. This could include water-clogging in vulnerable zones such as low water bridges, iris crossings, and roads, which could pose hazards to residents and travelers alike.

In light of these conditions, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has advised communities across Viti Levu, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands—including Moala and those in the Southern Lau Group—to stay vigilant and adhere to safety advisories. They emphasize avoiding crossing or swimming in flooded areas where water levels surpass knee height.

Residents are urged to take precautions and prepare for possible disruptions due to local flooding. The forecast indicates that the rainy conditions may continue, so it is crucial for individuals to monitor local updates and heed official guidance.

This situation serves as a reminder of the impact of weather on communities, highlighting the importance of preparedness and responsiveness in the face of natural disturbances.
