Fiji’s Bold Move to Bridge the Gender Gap in Leadership

The Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants (FICA) is launching a transformative Senior Executive Leadership Program aimed at addressing the gender gap in leadership roles, particularly in the realm of corporate governance. Principal consultant Gina Houng Lee emphasizes the significance of this initiative, noting that only 25 percent of board positions in Fiji are held by women.

The four-day program is designed to foster discussion and participation among women leaders, focusing on building support systems and enhancing professional branding and communication skills. With guidance from academic Dr. Nacanieli Rika, the program aims to empower women to reflect on their leadership journeys and actively contribute to advancing others within their fields.

In conjunction with FICA’s ongoing commitment to women’s leadership, this program aligns with broader efforts supported by the Asian Development Bank as part of the Pacific Private Sector Development Initiative (PSDI). The goal is not only to boost women’s representation in the workforce but also to highlight the benefits diversity brings to decision-making processes and overall corporate performance.

Prior initiatives, such as the earlier Senior Executive Women in Leadership Program, have already proven successful, with 25 women recently graduating and contributing to increased awareness around the importance of female representation in leadership. By equipping participants with vital skills and fostering a supportive network, FICA hopes to pave the way for a more gender-inclusive corporate environment in Fiji.

The commitment to promoting female leadership in the region speaks to a hopeful future where women’s contributions are fully recognized, ultimately driving economic growth and fostering a more equitable society. By continuing to engage women across various sectors, Fiji is set to enhance its leadership landscape, reflecting a diverse array of perspectives that can fuel innovation and success.
