Fiji’s Agriculture Sector on the Brink: Can New Infrastructure Save the Day?

The Agro Marketing Authority (AMA) in Nausori is facing pressing challenges due to limited storage capacity, a situation highlighted by Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu during a visit to the AMA headquarters in Suva. As agricultural production levels rise, the existing facilities are struggling to keep up. Rayalu noted that more than 32 tonnes of produce are currently stored at the Nausori site, which has resulted in temporary halts to procurement activities.

Rayalu acknowledged the successes of government agriculture programs, including increased production of cassava and dalo, which he believes indicate progress in supporting local farmers. However, he emphasized the need for infrastructure improvements to match this growth. The authority recently exported 1.3 tonnes of fish and other commodities to the United States, reacting quickly to new tariff requirements from the American government.

To tackle the storage shortage, Rayalu has proposed constructing modern collection centers and cold storage facilities throughout Fiji. He stated that these investments would not only resolve immediate logistical issues but also promote long-term rural development.

The AMA is already in the midst of expanding its operations, with new centers being established in Savusavu, Dama, and Lautoka, along with plans for a future site in Legalega, Nadi. Additionally, a new headquarters costing approximately $8 million is planned to enhance operational capabilities and generate substantial rental income, thereby improving the financial sustainability of the AMA.

The government is also exploring commercial opportunities related to nearby rivers, such as potentially constructing a jetty to reduce logistics costs. Rayalu underscored that these initiatives are part of a broader strategy to build a resilient and export-ready agricultural sector, benefiting Fiji’s rural communities.

These developments reflect a proactive approach by the government to not only address current challenges but also lay the groundwork for future agricultural success in Fiji. By improving infrastructure and supporting farmers, the government aims to foster an environment conducive to growth and sustainability in the agricultural sector.
