The Viti Roofing Devo Babas rugby team is set to showcase their skills at the 2025 NiuPower KMHL Sports Tok Rugby 7s in Papua New Guinea. Head coach Bill Ratute announced that the Fiji Rugby Union extended the opportunity to the team to represent Fiji after receiving an invitation to compete at this prestigious international tournament.
The team will embark on their journey tonight, departing at 8:30 PM for Brisbane, Australia, before continuing on to Papua New Guinea. Coach Ratute emphasized the significance of this opportunity for his players, many of whom will be stepping onto an international stage for the first time.
“This is the first time we have received an invite to compete at an international tournament like this, and we are blessed to be given this opportunity to represent the country,” he stated. Ratute expressed gratitude towards the Fiji Rugby Union for the call-up, highlighting that the tournament will provide invaluable exposure for his players.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from Friday to Sunday, with the Devo Babas returning home the following Tuesday. This event not only aims to foster competition but also serves to uplift and inspire the next generation of rugby players in Fiji, showcasing the talent and potential within the sport.
Drawing from previous experiences, like their participation in the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s, where the Devo Babas impressed by advancing to the quarter-finals, they are well-prepared to tackle the challenges ahead. The excitement surrounding these international matches is a testament to the team’s growth, community support, and the enduring spirit of Fijian rugby.
The team’s journey is emblematic of how sport can unite diverse communities while providing opportunities for personal and athletic development, leaving a hopeful and positive impression as they represent their country on an international platform.
