Fiji Kula’s new head coach, Nicola Demaine, is set to lead the national women’s football team in their inaugural match during the FIFA Women’s World Cup OFC Qualifiers next week. Demaine took over the coaching role on January 25, following the expiration of Angeline Chua’s contract in December.
Despite the limited preparation time for the qualifiers, Demaine is optimistic about the team’s progress over the past few weeks. The Fiji Kulas promptly entered training camp as soon as Demaine was appointed, allowing them to start building their strategy and team culture.
“It’s hard to say how we’ll do at the qualifiers; there’s so much variance in the teams now in Oceania. What I can say is that we will give everything our best for Fiji, for the country. I’m really happy with the progress that we’ve made so far in the training program. We’ve had a short time to get things going, but we’re developing our culture and how we want it to be,” stated Demaine, highlighting her commitment to the team’s success.
The qualifiers will take place at the 4R Govind Park Stadium in Ba, where the Kulas will face New Caledonia next Friday at 4 p.m. They will subsequently play against Papua New Guinea on March 2 and conclude the qualifiers with a match against Vanuatu on March 5.
Fiji’s women’s football team is looking to make a strong impression during the qualifiers, and with Demaine’s leadership and the team’s dedication to training, there is hope for a competitive performance. The excitement surrounding the team’s efforts reflects a growing passion for women’s football in the region.
