The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is poised to announce new head coaches for both the Fijiana 7s and 15s teams this week, as confirmed by CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu. Offers have been sent to various candidates, and the organization is currently waiting for their responses.

Among the prominent applicants is Waisale Serevi, a legendary figure in rugby sevens, who has shown interest in the Fijiana 7s coaching position after previously coaching the Indian Women’s 7s team. Additionally, former player Sireli Bobo has also been mentioned as a potential candidate for the roles, although Nayacalevu has withheld the names of all applicants for the time being.

Serevi is set to collaborate with Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council coaching team to help prepare the Under-20 7s squad. Recently, he was appointed the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water, further solidifying his ties within the rugby community.

The Fijiana 15s coaching role became available following the departure of Mosese Rauluni in October 2023. Rauluni played an integral part in leading the team to victory in the Oceania Championship and securing qualification for the upcoming Rugby World Cup. His successor will face the challenge of maintaining this impressive legacy.

Similarly, the Fijiana 7s head coach position has been open since the contract of Saiasi Fuli was not renewed in December after five successful years, during which he led the team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

This transitional period for both teams presents unique opportunities to establish strong leadership that can enhance performance and achieve better results on the international stage. Nayacalevu expressed the need to appoint the best candidates for these crucial positions, reflecting a commitment to improving the teams’ gaming abilities.

The expected announcements have generated a sense of optimism within the rugby community, marking a significant step forward for women’s rugby in Fiji. The FRU’s dedication to nurturing talent and striving for international success points towards a hopeful and positive future, inspired by both experienced and emerging leaders in the sport.

In summary, these developments are not just a shift in coaching personnel but symbolically represent an opportunity for renewed growth and increased competitiveness for Fijian women’s rugby on the global stage.
