One hundred and four teams are primed to participate in this year’s Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s tournament, setting a new record for the event. Tournament Coordinator Jeff Tamata announced that 64 of these teams will be competing in the men’s category, while the remaining teams will represent women’s and youth competitions, respectively.
The surge in interest from clubs has been remarkable, with six additional teams on standby awaiting opportunities to secure a place in the tournament. Tamata expressed his excitement, noting, “This year is going to be the biggest number of teams ever participating in the Nawaka 7s. We are expecting a very exciting tournament along with some thrilling and quality rugby.”
The pool draws for the tournament, which takes place at Prince Charles Park in Nadi next Friday and Saturday, are set to be announced this Saturday. This year’s Nawaka 7s not only marks a milestone in participation but also continues a nearly four-decade-long tradition of enhancing grassroots rugby in Fiji.
Previously, events like the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s and Tabadamu 7s have highlighted Fijian rugby talent, showcasing emerging players who often progress to national teams. The Nawaka 7s aligns with this ongoing effort to develop local talent and engage communities through sports, as seen through various initiatives that bolster grassroots participation.
With energy building for the Nawaka 7s, the anticipation of a vibrant competition stemmed from enhanced participation illustrates the vital role that rugby plays in Fijian culture, fostering unity and community spirit across the nation. This event promises not only thrilling matches but also a celebration of local talent and enthusiasm in sports.
