Fiji Finals 2023: A New Era for Athletics?

The Fiji Finals is set to take place from December 24 to 26 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, with the tournament’s director, Biu Colati, pledging to address shortcomings from last year to ensure a well-organized event. After acknowledging past challenges, Colati has emphasized that the organizing committee is taking significant steps to improve the overall experience for athletes and officials alike.

Colati explained that one of the new measures introduced is the appointment of a recall referee, who will be present in the control room alongside a representative from the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation and a member from Athletics Fiji or Oceania Athletics. This duo will review events post-completion to confirm that they were conducted without error, thereby fostering a fair and transparent competitive environment.

The commitment to improvement resonates with similar initiatives observed in other recent athletic events. For instance, Patrick Bower, the president of the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Association, expressed a similar dedication to addressing participant concerns during the 2024 Tuckers Ice-Cream Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Championships. This included implementing feedback mechanisms to ensure fairness and inclusivity across all competitions, demonstrating a collective push towards enhancing the sporting landscape in Fiji.

Colati is confident that the lessons learned from last year’s difficulties have been effectively addressed, ensuring a seamless experience for athletes during the upcoming championships, which promise three days filled with high-intensity competition. This proactive approach is optimistic for the future of athletics in Fiji, reflecting significant momentum towards fostering an environment where young talents can thrive.

Overall, the enhancements in planning and organization signify a hopeful direction for Fijian athletics, nurturing both performance and integrity as the event draws near.
