Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted the intricate security challenges facing the Pacific region during the recent Pacific Regional and National Security Conference held in Suva. The conference brought together a diverse group of leaders, including regional prime ministers and security experts, to discuss threats ranging from climate change and transnational crime to the impacts of geopolitical tensions.

In his keynote address, Rabuka expressed concern over the region’s growing uncertainty, emphasizing that it has historically been a site of conflict rather than calm. He introduced the “Ocean of Peace Declaration,” which aims to provide a framework for addressing these complex issues collaboratively. This initiative is expected to gain further endorsement during the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in the Solomon Islands.

Echoing Rabuka’s thoughts, Niue Prime Minister Dalton Tagelagi urged attendees to rethink the meaning of security in the Pacific context, stressing that it includes people’s well-being, cultural values, and environmental sustainability. This perspective highlights the deep-rooted interconnections between security and community stability.

The conference also underscored existing frameworks such as the Boe Declaration on Regional Security and the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, promoting a comprehensive, coordinated response to contemporary challenges. As discussions progress, a common theme emerged, focusing on inclusivity and the importance of aligning efforts with community values and needs.

With regional leaders emphasizing cooperation and collective resilience, there is an optimistic outlook for achieving peace and stability in the Pacific. As they work towards a cohesive vision of security and development, the conference stands as a hopeful beginning for united efforts in safeguarding the region’s future amidst the multifaceted challenges ahead.
