Residents of Naviavia village on Vanua Levu will experience improved communication, especially during cyclone season, thanks to the recent installation of Starlink satellite internet and a new telephone system. On March 1, 2025, the community officially received the equipment from Assistant Minister for Information Hon. Aliki Bia as part of a pilot program.
The installation, facilitated by Network Sharks, an authorized dealer of Starlink, includes a satellite dish, a telephone, and two Wi-Fi access points that operate on a voucher-based system for internet access. District Advisory Councillor Mr. Sade Marika emphasized the significance of this initiative, especially during natural disasters when communication is crucial, stating, “This is a really big help for us here in Naviavia, as we are not able to communicate with those around us, especially during bad weather.”
Mr. Marika also highlighted the broader advantages of enhanced internet access, which will not only assist in emergencies but also keep villagers updated regarding government support programs and development opportunities for the community.
This pilot program aims to evaluate the effectiveness of satellite internet in remote areas, potentially setting the stage for similar initiatives across Fiji.
This development aligns with the Fijian government’s ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity nationwide, which includes designating other locations across the country for Starlink services, as noted by Communications Minister Manoa Kamikamica. Such projects are crucial in bridging the digital divide and ensuring remote communities are not left behind in the digital era. As more villages gain access to reliable internet, the potential for socioeconomic growth and resilience in the face of natural disasters increases, fostering a brighter future for these communities.
