The Navala Youth sevens rugby team is earnestly preparing to compete in the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, scheduled from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Despite facing significant challenges during their training, the team remains optimistic about their prospects.

Ilairo Belo, a team official, highlighted the players’ determination and teamwork as they navigated through difficult preparations. They have independently organized fundraising activities to cover their transportation and accommodation costs, showcasing their commitment to competing this year. The players often train with makeshift equipment, such as tires, due to a lack of proper gym facilities, demonstrating their resilience and resourcefulness.

Recent flooding has complicated their training process, impacting both their usual practice grounds and local infrastructure, including a bridge connecting their village to the Ba River. In light of these challenges, the players have sought odd jobs, including farm work, to support their travel and participation in the tournament.

This marks the second time the Navala Youth team will compete in the Coral Coast 7s, and they have set a goal to reach the playoffs. Belo underscored the importance of mental focus and effective communication on the field, especially as they will face tough competition from both local and international teams. He has also encouraged players to avoid negative influences, urging them to channel their efforts into showcasing their talent, which could potentially lead to professional opportunities in rugby.

The unique bond among the players, many of whom hail from the same village, significantly enhances their teamwork and camaraderie. Belo has called on the village of Navala Ba to rally behind the team, emphasizing that strong community support is crucial as they represent their village.

Their journey reflects not only the determination and resilience of these young athletes but also the transformative power of sports within their community. As they prepare for the tournament, the Navala Youth team embodies hope, showing that with dedication, unity, and support from their village, they can aspire to achieve their dreams and inspire future generations.

In summary, the Navala Youth sevens rugby team strives to overcome adversity with resilience and a strong sense of community as they gear up for the Coral Coast 7s. Their journey not only encourages personal growth but also fosters communal pride, illustrating the far-reaching impact of sports as a pathway to brighter opportunities.
