Three juveniles found guilty of stealing sporting equipment from a school in Nadi will have their two-year prison sentences suspended for seven years. The boys, aged 14 and 15, admitted to charges of aggravated burglary and theft after stealing two soccer balls, four rugby balls, and a volleyball net on October 19, 2024.
Court documents revealed that the juveniles cooperated fully with law enforcement during their questioning, which contributed to the decision to charge them rather than pursuing a more severe legal action. Displaying a genuine sense of remorse, the boys assured the court that they would not engage in further criminal activities and expressed a desire to transform their lives positively.
Justice Riyaz Hamza, presiding over the case at the High Court in Lautoka, noted the juveniles’ aspirations to become a MasterChef and a professional rugby player. In addition to the suspended sentences, Justice Hamza mandated a two-year probation period under the Social Welfare Department (SWD).
The court has directed the SWD to arrange immediate counseling sessions for both the juveniles and their parents, aiming to strengthen family dynamics and parental skills. Justice Hamza emphasized the necessity for parental involvement in ensuring compliance with the SWD’s guidance.
This resolution fosters hope for the juveniles, as it provides them with an opportunity for rehabilitation and the chance to pursue their dreams while being supported by their families and the community.
