Two police officers in Nadi are currently under investigation for allegations of bribery. The incident came to light on Sunday when a complainant, after leaving the police station, lodged a formal complaint via telephone. Following the complaint, the officers were swiftly arrested.
Police spokesman Wame Boutolu confirmed that the Internal Affairs department is looking into the matter to ensure a thorough inquiry. This incident aligns with ongoing concerns regarding integrity within the Fiji Police Force, as multiple similar allegations have surfaced in recent months, bringing attention to issues within the ranks.
In previous cases, the Fiji Police Force has faced public scrutiny over other misconduct allegations, including incidents involving officers being implicated in drug-related activities. For instance, Acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew recently emphasized that officers found engaging in corrupt practices or illegal activities would not be tolerated, reaffirming a commitment to reform within the organization.
Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has acknowledged the existence of “rotten apples” in the force and has advocated for a significant overhaul aimed at improving accountability and restoring public trust in the police. The current investigation into the two officers could serve as a crucial step towards addressing these deep-rooted issues and fostering a culture of integrity within law enforcement.
As investigations proceed, there remains hope that decisive actions taken against corrupt practices will lead to meaningful reforms. This openness to accountability may pave the way for a more trustworthy and effective police force, reassuring the community that law enforcement personnel are held to the highest standards of conduct.
