Revamping Local Infrastructure: Major Upgrades on the Horizon

Nadi Bus Stand Upgrade Sparks Economic Hopes

The upgrade of the Nadi bus stand is set to begin by the end of the month, according to an announcement by Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa. This renovation project, which will cost around $150,000, is anticipated to be completed by the end of the current financial year.

During a recent parliamentary session, Minister Nalumisa provided updates on various local infrastructure initiatives. He noted that the Lautoka swimming pool is projected for completion by the end of the 2025-2026 financial year. Additionally, the second phase of the Govind Park redevelopment in Ba is expected to conclude before the start of the next financial year. These facilities are essential for hosting local sports events and are expected to enhance economic activity in their respective areas.

The Minister also mentioned that the Lautoka City Council is in the process of upgrading their bus stand, which is scheduled for completion in the upcoming financial year—this follows recent improvements to public amenities at the location. Furthermore, the upgrading of Rakiraki market is currently in the tender process, signifying ongoing efforts to enhance local infrastructure.

Minister Nalumisa emphasized the need for accountability in addressing existing infrastructure problems, asserting the government’s commitment to resolving these issues. To further empower municipal councils, a comprehensive review of the Local Government Act is set to begin, which aims to streamline decision-making, enhance efficiency, and promote accountability. The government is also looking to modernize town planning regulations and foster partnerships with the private sector to encourage vital investments in municipal projects.

These initiatives reflect the government’s dedication to enhancing local infrastructure, which not only meets immediate community needs but also provides a foundation for future economic growth and engagement. As these projects are implemented, there is optimism that they will increase recreational opportunities and improve the overall quality of life for residents in these areas.
