Last Saturday, the Nabua Broncos women’s rugby league team achieved a significant milestone by securing their first-ever victory, triumphing over the Lamia Steelers with a score of 4-0 at Bidesi Park. This match was part of the Fiji National Rugby League Women’s Premiership, marking an important step for the newly established team.

Emele Uluilakeba, who played a key role as the team’s pivot, shared her excitement over the win. “This is the first time we played rugby league as a team. It’s our first year in the competition and also the first time we formed a women’s team for Nabua Broncos,” she noted. Despite having faced a tough defeat in their opening match against the USP Raiders, the team’s dedication during practice contributed to their impressive performance against Lami.

The Nabua Broncos team consists mostly of young women from the local community, many of whom were playing rugby league for the first time. Uluilakeba mentioned that even with limited resources, their focus on structure during training made a considerable difference in their gameplay. Currently, the team shares jerseys and gear with the men’s squad, emphasizing their need for sponsorship and support as they continue to develop.

The enthusiasm surrounding their success aims to inspire more women to take up the sport. Uluilakeba passionately encouraged others by stating, “It’s not only a guy’s game, but girls can also play too. Nothing is impossible.”

This local victory reflects a broader trend in Fiji, where women’s rugby is gaining traction and support. With an increasing number of young women participating in rugby, the sport’s popularity is on the rise, and initiatives such as the “Rise Program” aim to provide pathways for female athletes to pursue potential professional opportunities, enhancing the visibility and support for women’s sports in the region.

Overall, the emergence of teams like the Nabua Broncos highlights a hopeful trajectory for women’s rugby in Fiji, signaling a robust future for female athletes involved in the sport.
