FIJI Airways has unveiled the latest installment of its Meet the Makers series, highlighting local artisans whose talent enhances the airline’s renowned inflight experience. This edition spotlights Sigavou Studios, a family-run art studio led by Maria Rova, known for their vibrant designs now featured on paper cups aboard Fiji Airways flights.

Maria Rova and her team of skilled young artists draw their inspiration from Fiji’s rich traditions and stunning natural landscape. “Our process in creating the artwork here at Sigavou Studios honours the age-old practice of masi making,” Rova explained. The studio utilizes hand-crafted barkcloth from family members living on the remote island of Vatulele as their canvas. They incorporate contemporary pigments, developing a unique artistic style that continually evolves.

The designs created by Sigavou Studios are deeply personal, embodying a profound love for Fiji. “The motifs and vivid colours of our cup art reflect our deep affection for our country. Everything we do is inspired by Fiji’s beauty, culture, and way of life, made with love by a passionate team,” Rova emphasized.

Describing the collaboration with Fiji Airways as a dream realized for her small studio, Rova expressed her excitement when approached for the project: “When Fiji Airways asked us to create art for their new onboard cups, we were absolutely thrilled. Our first art studio was our family’s kitchen table, so to see our work flying across the world is beyond what we ever imagined.”

Fiji Airways Chief Customer Officer Akuila Batiweti remarked that the partnership underscores the airline’s commitment to celebrating local talent. “Every detail onboard our aircraft carries a story—from the meals to the design of a simple cup. Collaborating with Sigavou Studios offers our guests a genuine sense of place and connection, and we take pride in showcasing Fijian artistry at 30,000 feet,” he stated.

Fiji Airways continues to elevate the inflight experience through its Meet the Makers campaign, shining a light on the skilled individuals whose creativity and dedication contribute to a journey that is authentically Fijian. This initiative not only honors local artisans but also fosters a greater appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and artistry of Fiji, leaving passengers with a deeper sense of connection to the island nation.
