Manasa Mataele’s return to Fiji is fueling his aspirations of participating in the Rugby World Cup, as the dynamic winger prepares to contribute to the Drua team. After a noteworthy career in Super Rugby Pacific with the Crusaders, Chiefs, and Western Force, the 29-year-old is eager to impact the Drua’s performance now that he is back on home soil.

Since their debut season in 2022, the Drua have seen impressive results at home, securing 15 victories out of 22 matches held in Suva and Lautoka. However, they face challenges on international turf, with only three wins in four seasons away from Fiji. Mataele emphasizes the importance of remaining consistent, stating that the team’s aggression should not wane, regardless of the venue. He believes that cultivating leadership within the team is crucial for improving their away game.

The Drua’s upcoming campaign, set to kick off against Moana Pasifika next Saturday in Lautoka, comes on the heels of significant player turnover during the offseason. Key players like captain Tevita Ikanivere, Caleb Muntz, Ratu Leone Rotuisolia, Selestino Ravutaumada, and star midfielder Iosefo Masi have departed, leaving a gap in experience. However, the arrival of former Wallabies and Force halfback Issak Fines-Leleiwasa, who brings Fijian heritage, alongside lock Temo Mayanavanua returning from Europe, adds valuable experience to the squad, boosting Mataele’s optimism.

Mataele recognizes the trend of Fijian players moving to lucrative foreign leagues but remains focused on the positive team dynamics and the expertise they bring back home. He is determined to instill a strong work ethic within the Drua and believes the team’s potential is exceptionally high. With aspirations to represent Fiji on the world stage again, Mataele aims to showcase his skills and passion as he takes the field alongside family and friends. The thrilling atmosphere of playing in front of the home crowd adds an emotional layer to his return, promising an exciting season ahead for both Mataele and the Drua.
