Malolo’s triumphant return to the Skipper Cup has been marked by a thrilling match that led them to secure a spot in the semi-finals. The team narrowly edged out Nadroga, defeating them 23-22 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, a significant achievement after their prolonged absence from the competition.

The match was filled with intense action, showcasing both teams’ determination. Malolo started strong with an unconverted try by Aminiasi Natuiyaga just four minutes into the game. They quickly followed with a converted try from Simeli Karacia in the seventh minute, alongside a successful penalty kick by Esala Nalobo. Nadroga, not to be outdone, responded with an unconverted try by Joveci Naika in the 20th minute.

The match saw moments of high pressure, including a yellow card for Nadroga’s Nasoni Tuigaloa in the 24th minute, allowing Malolo to add to their score with a penalty from Nalobo. The first half concluded with further efforts from both sides, including another unconverted try from Malolo’s Isaia Rugu.

After halftime, Malolo’s solid performance continued with a successful penalty kick, creating a critical lead. Despite efforts from Nadroga to close the gap with a potential late try, the final whistle saw Malolo maintaining their slim lead, securing their semi-final position.

This victory served as a bittersweet moment for the Malolo team, as they honored the memory of their late technical advisor Esala Nauga with a moment of silence observed by all attendees at Lawaqa Park. The win not only highlights Malolo’s resilience and commitment to excel in Fijian rugby but also marks a proud return to the competitive arena after years of setbacks. The anticipation for their upcoming semi-final match is palpable, with hopes high that they will continue to showcase their skill and tenacity on the field.

Malolo’s journey acts as an inspiration for many, underscoring the community spirit and dedication within Fijian rugby, as they strive to make their mark in this vibrant sport.
