After a successful launch for Bollywood with the Aamir Khan film “Sitaare Zameen Par,” excitement builds for the upcoming release, “Maa.” The film is generating buzz due to its star-studded cast led by Kajol, a suspenseful horror genre, and its thought-provoking subject matter.

A key concern prior to the film’s release was the response from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), particularly given the previous stringent measures they imposed on other films. There was apprehension that “Maa” might face numerous cuts or be rated as an adult-only film. However, in a pleasant surprise, the CBFC has approved “Maa” without any audio or visual cuts, allowing it to be rated 16+ which permits viewers under 18 to watch the film. This decision marks a rare instance in the industry, especially since horror films usually receive an ‘A’ certification.

A source familiar with the review process noted that the examiners voiced concerns over the film’s disturbing scenes but ultimately decided against imposing cuts. Previously, films like “Sitaare Zameen Par” faced significant edits, which raised eyebrows among filmmakers. This context makes the uncut approval for “Maa” particularly noteworthy and a potential trendsetter for further projects within the horror genre.

Despite requesting the filmmakers to enhance the disclaimer’s readability and provide details about sensitive subjects such as “anti-girl child and human sacrifice,” the CBFC’s overall leniency signals an evolving attitude toward horror narratives in Indian cinema.

“Maa,” which runs for approximately 135 minutes, is set for theatrical release on June 27. As anticipation builds, the film not only showcases the power of innovative storytelling in an evolving genre but may also inspire a new wave of films that balance commercial success with responsible content. The developments around “Maa” reflect a hopeful direction for future filmmakers seeking to push boundaries while engaging wider audiences.
