Several young girls from Lautoka have been honored as recipients of the 2025 Westpac Women and Girls Education Grant, with many attributing their achievement to the unwavering encouragement of teachers and families. Among the winners are best friends Shreya Kumar and Diksha Mala, both Year Seven students at Lautoka Andhra Sangam School, who secured grants in the Primary School category.
They received their certificates during a presentation ceremony held at the Westpac Lautoka Branch in December. Shreya expressed her pride in receiving the grant, thanking her teacher and mother for their support in encouraging her to apply. Meanwhile, Diksha shared that the duo was inspired to apply after watching an online video, and they supported each other through the application process with guidance from their class teacher.
Westpac Fiji’s Chief Executive Shane Smith emphasized the bank’s long-term commitment to empowering women and girls through education, noting that for over 15 years, the grant program has played a vital role in helping Fijian women and girls achieve their academic aspirations and realize their full potential.
Another grant winner, Saanvi Chand, a Year Eight student from Lautoka Central Primary School, also credited encouragement from her family and school for her success. She received her grant for a hand-drawn poster entry, demonstrating her dedication while also preparing for a school oratory competition. Her father, Ashish Chand, remarked that the grant provided not just financial assistance, but also helped instill confidence and motivation in these young scholars.
Westpac announced its intention to persist in advancing education and providing opportunities for young girls throughout Fiji via the Women and Girls Education Grant program in 2026 and beyond. This commitment reflects a hopeful future for countless young girls and their educational journeys, promoting empowerment and success.
