Landowners from the mataqali Nawavatu in Kalabu Village are calling on the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) to enhance transparency and communication concerning land-related matters. Frustrations expressed on social media have highlighted concerns about the TLTB’s management of these issues.
One landowner, Loa ta Raibevu, publicly criticized the board for allegedly facilitating leases without obtaining the necessary approval or informed consent from mataqali members. She also raised questions regarding the legitimacy of the TLTB’s investments and the $750,000 balance that the board has withheld for investment purposes.
In response, the TLTB confirmed that it recently hosted a consultation with mataqali Nawavatu members to address these concerns. During this meeting, elders emphasized the importance of maintaining traditional protocols and handling internal matters with integrity. The board explained the processes involved in land use changes and outlined extensive consultations held with elders and trustees, stressing that the project in question has been recognized as one of national interest.
The TLTB stated that six acres of land were allocated for a landowners’ empowerment initiative, which represents a significant opportunity for economic growth. Key issues discussed included premium valuation, the consultation process, and the communication between trustees and mataqali members. Acknowledging a breach of protocol, youth members at the meeting extended their apologies.
Furthermore, the TLTB clarified the management of funds, noting that decisions regarding a $3 million distribution and the withheld $750,000 were made with investment objectives in mind to benefit landowners over the long term. The board also shared historical data regarding lease payments to landowning units, showcasing that approximately $14 million has been distributed since 2015.
While some members called for the immediate release of withheld funds, others expressed a desire to focus on investment opportunities for the future wellbeing of the mataqali. Interest was indicated in utilizing the Taukei Development Fund to support both individual and collective business initiatives.
The TLTB aimed to foster constructive dialogue among the community, reinforcing unity, mutual respect, and strategic decision-making for the mataqali’s prosperity. The board urged for responsible media reporting on such sensitive issues to prevent misinformation, emphasizing their ongoing commitment to transparency and fair land management for the benefit of all iTaukei landowners.
This situation highlights the balancing act between preserving traditional practices and making informed decisions that benefit the community economically. By engaging in open discussions and emphasizing unity, the mataqali Nawavatu can work towards a more transparent and collaborative relationship with the TLTB.
