Fiji’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Mosese Bulitavu, is taking significant steps to address pressing environmental issues, particularly focusing on enhancing flood resilience and managing plastic pollution. During the National Capacity Building for Plastic Pollution in the Pacific Island Countries Workshop held in Nadi, he announced plans to improve drainage systems and construct effective floodgates and seawalls, particularly to combat saltwater intrusion impacting local agriculture.

Mr. Bulitavu emphasized the ministry’s commitment to various climate adaptation programs, supported by an adaptation fund aimed at facilitating nature-based relocations for communities affected by climate change. He recognizes the vulnerability of areas like Nadi to flooding and is collaborating with the public works ministry to modernize aging infrastructure.

Two weeks prior, the National Anti-Litter Campaign was launched, aimed at significantly reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices across the islands. The Minister underscored the broader vision of the National Development Plan (2025-2029), which seeks to position Fiji as a global leader in sustainability. This plan involves strengthening environmental legislation, providing incentives for sustainable practices, and encouraging the use of alternatives to plastic.

Mr. Bulitavu concluded by highlighting the importance of regional collaboration and building a skilled workforce to ensure that Fiji can shape its own sustainable future. His proactive approach reflects a hopeful commitment to environmental stewardship and a sustainable path forward for the nation.
