The Fiji Meteorological Service has warned of the potential for significantly wet conditions in various regions of Fiji in the upcoming weeks and months, primarily due to the ongoing La Niña conditions. The Early Action Rainfall Watch, released recently, aims to provide the Fiji National Disaster Management Office and local stakeholders with vital information on recent rainfall trends and forecasts, aiding in early preparation and response strategies.

According to the outlook, from January 15 to January 28, there is a medium likelihood of experiencing very wet conditions in the Northern Division, Yasawa-i-Rara, Viwa, the Mamanuca Group, and Rotuma. Furthermore, projections for January 2026 indicate a similar medium chance of substantial rainfall for some interior regions of Viti Levu, alongside most of Vanua Levu.

Looking ahead to the January to March 2026 period, the forecast suggests a sustained medium probability of significant rainfall in interior Viti Levu, including areas such as Monasavu and Dobuilevu, as well as Seaqaqa, Labasa, and parts of Northern Vanua Levu.

Meteorological authorities have confirmed the presence of La Niña conditions under the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) framework, a climatic pattern known for typically bringing increased rainfall to Fiji. In light of these forecasts, officials are emphasizing the importance of vigilance among communities, especially in areas prone to flooding. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official updates and prepare accordingly, as these anticipated wetter conditions could elevate the likelihood of flooding and other related risks.

The proactive approach taken by the Fiji Meteorological Service and disaster management agencies reflects a commitment to safeguarding communities and minimizing potential disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions.
