The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) has introduced an innovative initiative called the “Tabu Soro Futupolo ECE Comic Programme.” This program aims to engage children between the ages of 4 to 6 in football while simultaneously imparting important life skills. The launch event took place at the Fiji FA Academy in Ba and attracted a large number of parents and young children.
The event featured Marc McElrath, Managing Director of McDonald’s Fiji, as the chief guest, alongside Fiji FA legend Iosefo Vosaboto, both of whom celebrated this unique approach to children’s engagement through the sport. The program utilizes a comic book format to convey crucial messages and football instructions tailored to young audiences. Noteworthy football figures, including Roy Krishna and Adi, are highlighted as role models to inspire the children.
Louisa Simmons, the Project Lead, articulated that the program goes beyond mere football training. It employs storytelling to instill values such as teamwork, healthy living, and resilience, encapsulated in the slogan ‘Tabu Soro,’ meaning “never give up.” Simmons expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential to ignite a passion for football in children and encourage them to aspire to great dreams.
There are plans to implement this program in Early Childhood Education (ECE) centers throughout the Western, Southern, and Northern regions of Fiji, featuring weekly visits to kindergartens. This initiative builds on a successful pilot project from the previous year, supported by coaches from Japan.
The launch aligns with Fiji FA’s commitment to youth development exemplified by similar programs like the School Holiday Football Development Programme. These initiatives create pathways for young athletes to develop their skills, potentially leading to national representation, while promoting physical activity and personal growth. They play a significant role in enhancing community bonds through sports and nurturing a supportive environment for children.
As these exciting programs progress, there is significant potential to cultivate a new generation of football lovers in Fiji, promoting both their physical and emotional well-being while fostering a lifelong appreciation for the game.
