Samu Kerevi is poised for a return to the Wallabies, with indications that he may be included in the upcoming squad set to face Fiji and the British and Irish Lions. The Japan-based star was spotted at Ballymore while Wallabies management put a group of players through their paces, marking the third such camp in just over a week.

Kerevi’s presence comes just days before coach Joe Schmidt is expected to announce his squad for the first match of the year against Fiji, which is scheduled for July 6 in Newcastle. Alongside Kerevi, it’s anticipated that lock Will Skelton will also make the cut, adding significant size and strength to the team. The inclusion of Marika Koroibete, who’s also overseas-based, might be less certain but remains a possibility.

Despite not producing his best form in 2023, particularly after receiving a red card in a match against Wales, Kerevi’s training with the Sevens team suggests he is refining his skills and regaining confidence. At 111 kg, his sheer size could provide the Wallabies with a distinct advantage as they prepare to face the formidable Lions, who have impressive players like Bundee Aki and Sione Tuipulotu in their lineup.

Kerevi has overcome recent injuries and is reportedly back in peak form, which could play a crucial role in the Wallabies’ strategy against the Lions. His experience is significant, as he has already accumulated 50 Test caps, making his presence on the field invaluable.

Additionally, fellow Japan-based player Marika Koroibete expressed his desire to return to the Wallabies, having spoken with Schmidt several times about regaining his spot in the team. Koroibete reflected on his previous year, acknowledging that he wasn’t fully prepared when called back to the national side but is now focused on being at his best if selected.

The combination of Kerevi and Koroibete could highlight the depth and resilience of the Wallabies lineup, promoting optimism among fans as the team gears up for one of the most anticipated matches in rugby history. This is an exciting time for Australian rugby, with the prospect of these players contributing to the team’s success in the face of challenging opponents.
