Kava’s European Dream: A New Hope for Fiji’s Industry

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his approval of a recent court ruling in Germany that may allow kava to be sold across Europe and other nations. He views this as promising news for Fiji’s kava sector, presenting a significant opportunity for both Fiji and the Pacific region.

On June 18, 2024, a German court lifted a two-decade-long prohibition that had prevented kava from being marketed as a pharmaceutical product. Although the ruling is currently under appeal, there is optimism that kava could soon be available for legal sale in Germany.

Rabuka emphasized that this development would enhance kava exports and provide essential support to the thousands of Fijians dependent on kava farming.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica also praised the decision, highlighting its importance in widening Fiji’s international presence and stimulating economic growth. He assured that the government is dedicated to assisting kava producers in taking advantage of this opportunity.

Kamikamica stated that efforts are underway to ensure Fiji complies with international standards, enabling the country to fully capitalize when new markets become available. He urged continued support for the kava industry, aiming for a brighter future ahead.
