Renowned Indian Kathak teacher and performer Pandit Avijeet Chakravarty is set on making a significant impact during his time in Fiji, aiming to teach at least 500 locals the classical dance form. He believes that through Kathak, he can foster cultural pride, discipline, and confidence among the youth.
Upon his arrival, Mr. Chakravarty felt an immediate connection to Fiji, particularly when he heard locals speaking Hindi, reminiscent of the Bhojpuri dialect from his hometown of Varanasi. “For the first two or three days, everything felt different, but once I heard people speaking Hindi here, I felt like I was back home,” he expressed. His warm reception from the community has further affirmed his sense of belonging, stating, “Now I don’t even feel like I am outside India. The people are very cooperative and welcoming.”
Mr. Chakravarty is in Fiji under an 18-month contract with the High Commission of India and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre. Currently, he is conducting a three-day Kathak workshop in partnership with the Fiji Museum, a project initiated by Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Shri Sunil Mehta.
With a Master of Music in Kathak Dance from Banaras Hindu University, Mr. Chakravarty has performed across more than 40 countries and has previously participated in an international cultural mission in South Korea through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Ministry of External Affairs. His passion isn’t limited to just teaching Indo-Fijians; he is also eager to engage with iTaukei communities.
“I hope to teach more than 500 students during my time here. Kathak is not just dance – it builds rhythm, focus, discipline, and respect for culture,” he highlighted. He emphasizes the importance of introducing children to the classical arts, noting that such exposure can instill confidence and cultural awareness. “Children are more delicate than flowers; that is why I keep my teaching friendly. Art helps them grow with confidence and cultural awareness.”
The initiative has the potential to strengthen cultural exchanges and foster deeper connections between Fijians and Indian traditions, paving the way for a vibrant cultural tapestry in Fiji.
