Inquiry into Fiji’s Corruption Commissioner Faces Extended Deadline

The Commission of Inquiry (COI) investigating the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is seeking an extension for its hearings, citing the need to review a substantial amount of evidence. Initially scheduled to conclude by January 31, the inquiry has only heard from seven of the 35 witnesses summoned to provide testimony, prompting the COI to request an extension until the end of February to ensure all individuals can be heard.

Justice David Ashton-Lewis, who oversees the inquiry, highlighted the importance of thorough and detailed questioning over simple affirmative or negative responses. The objective is to ascertain whether Malimali’s appointment followed legal protocols and whether there was any undue influence from vested interests, particularly relevant to ongoing FICAC investigations involving high-profile individuals.

Counsel Assistant Janet Mason remarked that the inquiry also emphasizes the integrity of public institutions alongside individual conduct, as the inquiry’s terms of reference delve into the processes and potential interference involved in Malimali’s appointment.

The COI’s commitment to a meticulous investigation is crucial for rebuilding public trust and accountability in governance. The inquiry represents a significant effort to ensure transparency and adherence to legal standards within Fiji’s institutions.

In summary, the extension request reflects a dedication to thoroughness in uncovering the truth. This could ultimately lead to meaningful reforms and a strengthened culture of integrity in Fiji’s governance landscape, offering hope for improved accountability in the future.
