Former Chair of the National Fire Authority (NFA) Board, John O’Connor, has pleaded “Not Guilty” to corruption charges filed by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). O’Connor made the plea during a court appearance alongside Daniel Whippy, Managing Director of Carpenters Fiji, who also pleaded “Not Guilty.”
O’Connor faces a charge of Abuse of Office, stemming from allegations that between January 1 and September 28, 2018, he improperly directed NFA officers to alter findings in a fire investigation report concerning a fire incident at the MH Warehouse in Walu Bay on April 8, 2018. The indictment suggests that these actions undermined the rights of the NFA and were intended to provide personal benefits to O’Connor.
Whippy is charged with Counseling for the Omission of Offense, as he is accused of advising O’Connor to amend the investigation report’s findings.
During the court proceedings, Whippy’s counsel informed the magistrate about his client’s need for overseas medical treatment, specifically knee surgery scheduled from February 2 to March 1, 2025. The FICAC prosecutor did not oppose this request, resulting in the lifting of a Stop Departure Order, thus granting Whippy permission to travel for his medical procedure.
The court has scheduled a follow-up mention for March 3, 2025, to establish further steps in this significant case.
This ongoing legal situation emphasizes the critical need for accountability and transparency in Fiji’s public institutions. As the judicial process unfolds, there is hope that it will restore public trust in governance and reinforce ethical standards in both public and private sectors. Ongoing legal efforts aim to establish a culture of integrity, which is crucial for fostering confidence in leadership and public institutions in Fiji.
