Horror Movies Rise: Why Audiences Are Choosing Scares Over Superheroes

Horror films are making a resounding comeback at the box office, marking a significant shift in audience preferences as they move away from superhero movies and sequels. According to Comscore data, horror movies now account for 17 percent of North American ticket purchases, a notable increase from 11 percent in 2024 and just 4 percent a decade ago. This rising trend is driven by the success of films like “Sinners” and “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” both of which appeal to contemporary anxieties surrounding topics such as the global pandemic and societal issues.

Cinema owners are optimistic, viewing horror as a key genre to attract audiences back to theaters. As Brandt Gully, owner of Springs Cinema & Taphouse, noted, horror fills a specific void during difficult times and offers a unique experience that viewers cannot replicate at home.

The genre’s popularity stems from its ability to address darker aspects of life in a cathartic way. Film data analyst Stephen Follows emphasizes that horror allows audiences to confront unsettling issues in a controlled environment, providing a sense of closure often missing in real life. Moreover, lower production costs associated with horror films enable filmmakers to take creative risks and innovate, attracting high-profile directors such as Ryan Coogler and Jordan Peele, who have found success in horror storytelling.

“The Substance,” an international hit grossing over $77 million, exemplifies the genre’s broad appeal, with significant earnings sourced from outside the U.S. This is mirrored in the success of AMC’s series “The Walking Dead,” which amassed massive viewership on Netflix, indicating that horror content truly resonates with global audiences.

The theatrical experience enhances the horror genre, capturing the shared thrill of fright in communal settings. Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum highlights this, noting that the tension and excitement found in theaters are hard to duplicate at home, making horror a perfect date-night option.

As the industry looks ahead, numerous horror films are set to grace screens this summer, promising not only an engaging cinematic experience but also a resurgence for theaters that have experienced hardships during the pandemic. With ongoing interest in horror, and a plethora of new releases on the horizon, there is a sense of hope that this genre will continue to invigorate the film industry while providing entertainment that resonates deeply with the audience.

This positive momentum is crucial as theaters recover and adapt in an ever-evolving landscape, positioning horror films as both a source of fun and a reflection of societal issues. The future looks bright for horror, with the collective enthusiasm for new narratives that entertain and provoke thought, ensuring the genre’s enduring place in cinema.
