Freddie Wisco, an undefeated light welterweight boxer, recently returned to his home island for a significant fight, as reported in a historical article from The Fiji Times dating back to February 12, 1983. Wisco, traveling with his father aboard the Gurawa, arrived at Kavala Bay to prepare for a match against Amania Dakai of the Salvation Army.

Having been away for four years, Wisco was excited to connect with his community and showcase what he had learned in boxing. He was set to fight Dakai in a main supporting bout of a program organized by Samu Matanisaga to aid the Kadavu District School.

Reflecting on his preparation, Wisco noted that he had observed Dakai’s previous performance, where Dakai secured a victory against Ambika Prasad at the National Gymnasium. Confident in his strategies, Wisco expressed a desire for the match to go the distance, emphasizing the significance of fighting in front of his home crowd and maintaining his unbeaten streak, which at the time stood at ten victories.

In addition to his own fight, Wisco contributed by training select relatives from his village to participate in preliminary bouts. His training regimen included sessions at the renowned Marciano Boxing Club and with local trainers Luke Ravuga, Samisoni Rayawa, and Vilikesa Bole.

The event garnered approval from the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association, reflecting a supportive infrastructure for boxing in Fiji. Such events play a crucial role in fostering local talent and inspiring future generations, echoing sentiments expressed by other boxers in Fiji about the importance of discipline, community support, and dedication in achieving success in sports.

Wisco’s homecoming and fight symbolize not only a personal milestone in his boxing career but also a celebration of Fijian boxing’s rich heritage and community spirit. As Wisco steps into the ring, he hopes to pave the way for greater recognition of local talent on both national and international stages.
